Professor Edward Shorter

Professor Edward Shorter holds the Hannah Chair in the History of Medicine. Working within U of T’s Joint Centre for Bioethics and Department of Family and Community Medicine, Shorter has research and written extensively about the history of psychosomatic illness. He received the Jason A. Hannah Medal of the Royal Society of Canada for his book, A History of Psychiatry.

The Hannah Chair in the History of Medicine explores the interaction of medicine, culture and history, and promotes the study of how ideas about illness, patients’ behaviour and societal attitudes interact and change over time. Established in 1999, the chair provides medical students with a context for their studies. U of T received and matched a gift of $1.5 million from Associated Medical Services Inc. (AMS) to endow the chair in honour of AMS founder, Dr. Jason A. Hannah.
